Settling In

Updated: Jul 29, 2023

There were definitely ups and downs during my time here. I still remember my first night here. It really felt surreal. I was a 6 hours flight away from home in a place where I didn’t know anyone. However, I was excited to explore this new city. As soon as we arrived, there was already an itinerary planned for us. The first thing was to take us, the international students, to a supermarket close called Asda, so we can be familiar with it. Fast forward to weeks later, this place definitely ended up being where I did most of the grocery shopping. We got our Oyster card, which is very much similar to the Metrocard back in NYC. However, the cost was much more than the Metrocard. Oyster cards cost 5 pounds, while the Metrocards cost $1. I still remember how weird it felt entering the bus due to the fact that they drive on the left side. It took a month or more to get used to and now I can say that it has become a new normal to me. My first week here was the welcome week which consisted of a lot of workshops and information sessions as well as tours of the beautiful campus. During this week, I received my classes or “modules” as referred to here in London. However, class didn’t start until the 26th of September. I was so excited to start my classes after reading the descriptions and the materials that will be covered. The classes that I’m taking are Language, Society, and Power, Contemporary Issues in Global Religions, and International Business and Emerging Markets. The International Business and Emerging Markets class ended up being my favorite, I find it very much interactive and interesting. I appreciate how we were given the opportunity to act as International Business Managers of certain emerging economy countries and find the challenges that we may face and then find solutions to those challenges. I learned a lot about the different factors of International Business which strengthened my love for this field of study.

I’ll say I was feeling homesick the most in the second and third week. During this time, I wanted to go back home because I missed my friends and family a lot and I was hours away by plane ride. It took me a while to settle in, but I eventually did. I met some amazing people who I made great memories with. Even though I met these people a few months ago, it felt like years. This definitely helped me settle in this new city.

The Case of the "Jumper"

I still remember this encounter to this day. I was wearing a sweater, and my friend said that it was a cute jumper. I had to ask her...
